Your GKR Mission: "Skeptigate"

Posted by Ethan Poole on Thursday, January 27, 2011, In : Global Warming
Hey Neergs!

Do you remember "Climategate?"  That was the bruhaha where hackers stole files from legitimate climate scientists in an attempt to discredit the reality of global warming right before the climate summit of 2009. Unfortunately, the lazy media embraced the controversy without representing this smear campaign for what it was--an attempt to mislead the public into believing global warming is not an immediate and very real threat to our lives. The Republican party has used "Climategate"...

Embarassed for U.S. at COP16

Posted by Ethan on Thursday, December 2, 2010, In : Breaking News
Hey Neergs--

So have you been following the Climate Change Conference in Cancun--COP16? I knew going in that the best we could hope for would be some momentum--anything to keep the ball moving in the right direction. It appears that everyone else but the U.S. seems to get it, including China. Well, we've sent our representatives to this critical conference to help solve a crises that has rightly alarmed the world... and then we just sit back and wait for others to do the hard work? Do we even ...

United Nations Climate Change Conference, Cancun, Mexico

Posted by Ethan on Monday, November 29, 2010, In : Breaking News
Welcome Back Neergs!

Hope everyone had an enjoyable and "green" Turkey Day.  If you didn't have "tofurkey" maybe you celebrated with an organic, free range bird, or at least made the vegetarian dishes a bigger part of the feast. Well now that you are well fed, it's time to get back in the swing. I'm hoping a few of you Neergs are aware of the United Nation's Climate Change conference happening in Cancun now. For two weeks, the UN will attempt to ink agreements that would give billions of dolla...

Go EPA!

Posted by Ethan on Friday, November 12, 2010,
Hey Neergs!

If you don't know, EPA stands for Environmental Protection Agency. Their mission is to protect human health and the environment. Unfortunately, Big Oil, Dirty Coal and conservatives that align with them don't always see eye to eye with the EPA. The good news for us is that the Supreme Court actually made a really good ruling in 2007 giving the EPA the power to act on harmful gases like carbon dioxide emissions as provided under the Clean Air Act. The Republican party isn't happy ab...

Climate Scientists not going down without a fight!

Posted by Ethan on Monday, November 8, 2010, In : Breaking News
Hey Neergs--

Enough is enough! I was so excited to read the headline on the Huffington Post today, "Scientists Fight Back."  And I'm not talking about a headline on the green section--this is on the front page!!  Two separate initiatives are being organized to combat the newly elected Republican officials proud to be labeled "climate deniers."  One initiative involves the American Geophysical Union; they are planning to announce that 700 climate scientists will unite in speaking out on man-mad...

Stop the Climate Deniers!

Posted by Ethan on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, In : Vote for Green
Hey Neergs!

Okay, I admit it.  I just don't get it! Why isn't our congress doing more to stop global warming? Climate science is irrefutable at this point, unless your are a "flat earther." And why aren't the voters (our families) holding our elected officials accountable? I was listening to NPR radio on the way to school today and was alarmed to hear that the Republican party is likely to grab a majority of seats in the House of Representatives as a result of today's election. A Huffington Po...

Talk to your parents...and make them listen!

Posted by Ethan on Monday, November 1, 2010, In : Vote for Green
Hey Neergs--

Hope you had time to join us last week as we learned more about Esben and Karsten's amiiko website. We were amazed by the statistics and the impact of consumerism on our planet.  We learned that voting with our wallets and buying green is not enough--we need to kick it up a notch and research "fair trade" products. It is the socially responsible thing to do. We also learned that real sustainability is about zero waste.  A new model for businesses called "cradle to cradle" is a ver...

The Climate Deniers are Coming, Oh my!

Posted by Ethan Poole on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, In : Climate Bill
Hey Neergs!

First of all I'd like to thank everyone for all your help supporting our Climate Change Legislation Petition. We have a long way to go and will keep our petition up through the end of the month.  Please continue to spread the word and support our friends at 350.org.  They did an amazing job rallying people all over the world--over 7000 events in 188 countries. Astounding and inspiring. And yet, we have a lot of work to do still.

If I've learned one thing, it's that kids are capable ...

Happy Global Work Party Neergs!

This is a day to remember! 350.org has rallied more than 7000 events in 188 countries. It has been called the singled largest day of carbon-cutting action in the planet's hstory. And you are here for it! You can experience it first hand. You can go to 350.org and search for a local event in your area, and you can take carbon-cutting measures at home today (and from here on out!) to celebrate with your friends and family. You can also take an important step right...

350.org Takes Action--Gets Results!

Posted by Ethan on Thursday, October 7, 2010, In : Global Work Party
Hey Neergs--

If you don't know who Bill McKibben is, listen up!  He is the founder of 350.org and the Global Work Party coming up this Sunday, promoted as 10/10/10. The reason we applaud Bill McKibben is that he walks the walk! Last month Bill and some of his students traveled to visit President Obama in Washington D.C. to ask him to reinstall solar panels on the White House roof. The last solar panels had been installed during President Jimmy Carter's administration and were taken down by Pre...

Green Kids Rock with 350.org for Global Work Party

Posted by Ethan on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, In : Breaking News
Go Neergs, Go Neergs!

I have amazing news to share today. We submitted our plan to hold a virtual event for 350.org's Global Work Party on 10/10/10. The event is Green Kids Rock for Climate Legislation. It was time to stop talking and time to start doing.  I hope you share my enthusiasm because I now need you to walk the walk!  We are revamping our "Take Action" page for the virtual event, asking kids to "electronically" sign a petition that supports meaningful climate change. This isn't about...

Clean Air Act is 40!

Posted by Ethan on Wednesday, September 22, 2010,
Hey Neergs!

Well, it's the Clean Air Act's 40th Birthday. I know I should be celebrating. There are lots of reasons to of course.  Lisa P. Jackson, Administrator of the EPA, does an amazing job enumerating the reasons on her Huffington Post blog  (link below). And the Clean Air Act has been such an important piece of legislation for our country and the world without a doubt. Ms. Jackson runs the numbers--200,000 lives saved, decrease in heart and lung disease, significant reduction of common p...

Ocean Warming

Posted by Ethan on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, In : Global Warming
Hey Neergs--

Don't miss our
Neerg News page today where we feature an article, Live Climate Science from the High Arctic,  by Beth Kapusta from the Huff Post. The accompanying video (which can be seen below) with Dr. Simon Boxall is mind-blowing. Dr. Boxall says that our oceans cover 70 percent of our planet and are affected by climate change the most. The polar ice cap is melting quickly, and we are seeing the lowest ice-cover ever on human record. What does this mean? Well, the melting pola...

iMatter!

Posted by Ethan on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, In : Climate Bill
Hey Neergs!

I was inspired by this video (below) to bring up the subject of clean energy legislation again. If you've been following us, you know that we have created a Take Action page on www.GreenKidsRock.com to give kids an opportunity to voice their disappointment about the inaction of our congress.  It's completely unacceptable and now our country is not only in danger of  not moving forward on clean energy legislation, but taking back-steps.  Please read "What's at Stake in your Governo...

Hey Neergs--

I have a challenge for you!  We need to rally the troops. We want to know how you feel about climate change! Please go to our Take Action Tab and sign our climate bill petition, Green Kids Rock for Climate Change. We all want a strong climate bill.  What do you think should be in it? Ask your friends and tell them to check out our website. Our opinions matter and we have to get busy. I'm at a big swim meet this weekend--it's what I do when I'm not saving the planet, LOL! I'm going...

Greetings Neergs!
I'm so jazzed today.  It's a really good day to be a Neerg!  For those of you who are joining us late, a Neerg is definitely not a Nerd! In fact, it's about the coolest thing you can be.  Neergs (Greens spelled backwards) are motivated to make a difference.  We don't just talk about global warming and how to combat climate change, we do! Keep reading and I'll share our big plan with you.

Well, like all of you, I got so mad at our Senate for taking a recess (vacation) without p...

Death of the Climate Bill

Posted by Ethan on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, In : Climate Bill
Hey Neergs-

Listen, I know this is complicated stuff, this proposed climate bill. In a nutshell, the bill would have placed limits on carbon emissions produced from power plants, refineries and factories that contribute to global warming. The limit would put a price on pollution making it expense for companies to do business as usual, meaning they'd pay for their carbon-producing ways! It would force these companies to invest in clean energy alternatives.  Unfortunately, IMHO, our Senate, both...
